NN3012MB P4 Bearing Introduction & Machine Tool Spindle Working Tips

1. Basic Introduction
NN3012MB P4 is a super-precision double-row cylindrical roller bearing for machine tool spindles
- Size: 60 mm (d) × 95 mm (D) × 26 mm (B)
- Code explanation
- NN: inner ring with ribs, outer ring no ribs; separable design, can compensate thermal axial elongation
- M: solid brass (machined bronze) cage
- P4: ISO P4 super precision grade (higher accuracy than P5/P6, strict runout tolerance for spindle)
Load characteristic: only carries heavy radial load, can NOT take axial load. Axial positioning must be handled by paired angular contact ball bearings on the other spindle end
Core advantages for spindles
✅ Extremely high radial stiffness
✅ Super low rotational runout, good for fine milling/turning surface finish
✅ Separable: inner set and outer ring can be fitted separately
✅ Low heat generation compared with full complement roller bearings
Note: If marked K (NN3012MK P4), it is 1:12 tapered bore, which can adjust preload/clearance by pushing inner ring onto tapered spindle sleeve; NN3012MB is cylindrical bore, clearance fixed by manufacturing class

2. Key Tips for Machine Tool Spindle Assembly & Operation
2.1 Fit selection (critical for P4 precision)
- Inner ring: interference fit on spindle shaft (tight fit, rotates together with shaft)
- Outer ring: transition / light interference fit in housing bore; outer ring must be free for tiny axial sliding to absorb thermal expansion
- Housing & shaft roundness, taper, surface roughness must be controlled strictly; bad housing geometry will ruin P4 accuracy directly
- Do NOT hammer P4 precision bearing; use induction heater for inner ring heating only (max heating temp ≤120°C)
2.2 Preload & clearance control
- Cylindrical bore NN3012MB P4: radial clearance is preset by factory (C1 / C2 commonly for spindles). No on-site preload adjustment.
- Taper bore version NN3015MK P4: adjust radial preload by the lock nut on taper sleeve. Too heavy preload = overheat, burn bearing fast; too light preload = low stiffness, chatter, poor machining quality
- After preload setting, do cold run-in and check temperature rise
2.3 Lubrication recommendation for machine tools
1. Oil-air lubrication (most recommended for high-speed CNC spindle)
Stable oil supply, good cooling, low heat, suitable for continuous high rpm
2. Grease lubrication: for medium speed, intermittent cutting. Fill only 20–30% of internal space, over-grease causes severe overheating

3. Oil bath: not preferred for P4 high precision spindles, hard to control oil level and heat. Lubricant must be spindle-grade low-viscosity precision oil / high-speed spindle grease, keep clean; dirt is the top killer of P4 bearings
2.4 Run-in & monitoring before formal cutting
- Run-in step: low speed → medium speed → target speed, gradual ramp up
- Normal target: steady temperature ≤ 40–45°C above ambient; temperature rise continuously climbing means wrong preload, bad fit or poor lubrication
- Monitor vibration, spindle runout, noise; abnormal high frequency noise means contamination or roller raceway damage
2.5 Arrangement rule for spindle unit
NN30 P4 series is used as the floating radial support. It can float axially to release thermal elongation. Always match it with paired angular contact ball bearings (fixed end) to take axial thrust and locate the spindle axially.
❌ Mistake: using NN3012MB P4 alone to bear axial force, it will fail quickly

2.6 Storage & handling for spare P4 bearings
- Keep original sealed package until assembly; P4 precision raceway is easy to get rust and micro-dents
- Handle in a clean, dust-free workshop; wear lint-free gloves
- Do not mix inner ring and outer ring from different individual bearings (some P4 sets are matched non-interchangeable)
2.7 Common failure signs
- Workpiece chatter, poor Ra surface finish → insufficient preload or bearing wear
- Fast temperature rise, spindle hot → over-preload, too much grease, blocked oil-air line
- Cyclic vibration mark on machined surface → roller/raceway damage or contamination
- Spindle end radial runout out of tolerance → bearing mounting distortion or precision loss
